Beverages industry provides hydration advice during summer

The Australian Beverages Council, representing 95% of the non-alcoholic beverages industry, has recommended people meet their hydration needs during the hot weather from whatever non-alcoholic source available.

“As parts of the country suffer under extreme heat this summer, which can result in devastating consequences, people need to keep up the fluids from whatever non-alcoholic drinks possible. People should drink regularly throughout the day and not become thirsty which is a sign the body is starting to become dehydrated” said the Council’s CEO, Mr Geoff Parker.

“All non-alcoholic beverages are a source of water and therefore all beverages hydrate. Sparkling non-alcoholic beverages, both regular and low or no kilojoule varieties are made predominantly of water (85-99%), making them appropriate choices to meet hydration needs. Advice to limit intake of sugary drinks or those containing small amounts of caffeine during high temperatures is without foundation. People need to drink what suits their taste and dietary needs, and what’s available. This is especially so in hot weather. Common sense would tell us a nice cold drink on a hot day is a perfect match.

“For really young kids, cold water or milk is the best option.  Most Australians however, including older children, can consume a range of non-alcoholic beverages to meet their hydration needs that form part of balanced diet. This includes soft drinks, cordials, juices and both flavoured and plain waters.

“The industry is committed to providing a variety of great tasting products for every lifestyle and hydration occasion.  People can rely on any non-alcoholic beverage to hydrate. The hot weather recommendation from the industry is – drink throughout the day; avoid becoming thirsty; let taste be your guide” Mr Parker concluded.
